In memory of Dennis Siu

A revered figure in Hong Kong Volleyball and soccer circles, Dennis Siu came to Canada with enthusiasm for a sport he loved. As a player and long time supporter of the Flying Tigers Volleyball Club, Dennis encouraged players to work hard and contribute to the community while training. The result was countless successful fundraising events for both men and women’s team, which allowed for travels throughout North America, China and Hong Kong to compete. Under his Guidance the Flying Tigers flourished – in particular the women’s team gained prestige, winning five successive NACIVT Tournament Championship Titles.

Dennis Siu also made key contributions to the NACIVT circuit as an organizer and advocate. Despite his increasing age, Dennis continued to travel to cities throughout North America into his 80’s, to coach and support the different teams.

In addition to his official duties with the NACIVT and the Flying Tigers community, Dennis Siu a mentor and role model for younger generations. As a respectful and compassionate individual, Dennis genuinely cared for the wellbeing of his players, seeking to set a good example for them on and off the court. While developing the skills of those under his tutelage, the veteran always insisted that traits developed in volleyball should also be applied to everyday life. For example, strength, determination and good sportsmanship were considered attributes to be valued at home, in the workplace, in one’s studies and throughout the community. With his patience and encouragement, young athletes aspired to be good people as well as good players.

Just as Dennis Sui’s commitment to his family, volleyball and the greater Chinese community have been inspirational to those who knew him in the past, the memory of his achievements and integrity will continue to motivate many in years to come. In May of 2004, Dennis Siu passed away at the age of 98. He will be dearly missed.
